The Heights Democratic Club is a neighborhood-based, subgroup in affiliation with the Harris County Democratic Party. It was established to promote the ideas and beliefs of the Democratic party. We achieve our mission by recruiting speakers for our members from candidates and elected officals at all levels of government. We are called the Greater Heights Democratic Club because we welcome members from adjacent areas to the Heights, particularly inside the Loop between I-10 and Loop 610. Actually we welcome anyone of any belief, as long as they help us promote Democratic causes and candidates.

DEMOCRATIC WHIP JAMES E. CLYBURN TO HEADLINE JOHNSON-RAYBURN-RICHARDS DINNER
The Democratic Whip is the 3rd most powerful position in the US House of Representatives!!
Harris County Democratic Party chair Gerry Birnberg has announced that Congressmember James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, Majority Whip of the United States House of Representatives, the third highest ranking Democratic position in the House, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Johnson-Rayburn-Richards Dinner, to be held Saturday, October 17, 2009, at the Hilton Americas Hotel.
Individual tickets are $140.
The annual gathering of Democratic loyalists is expected to draw more than 1,200 people this year. It will begin with a VIP reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner and a full program starting at 7:00 p.m., and will feature the annual silent auction. Numerous elected officials and candidates from across the state are expected to be in attendance, as are Democratic clubs and organizations and other activists from across Harris County.
Representative Clyburn was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992, becoming the first African-American South Carolinian to serve in Congress since 1897. He has been Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and of the House Democratic Caucus. He sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee.
The role of the Whip is to “whip up” support for Democratic legislation when a vote is scheduled on the House floor and to keep Democratic members focused on their mission. (To learn more about the Whip’s position, click here.)

Let’s Get It Done: Health Insurance Reform Now Rally!
Houston City Hall Reflecting Pool
Thursday, September 3rd
6:30pm
Join Organizing For America and our local Health Care Action Now (HCAN) Partners as we rally in support of our Members of Congress!
As the recess winds down and our Members of Congress head back to DC we want to send them back to work with a clear message: Health Insurance Reform Care Can’t Wait!
We’re tired of seeing a small group of people spread lies about health care reform — they do not speak for us.
We have the chance to finally pass historic reforms that will create accessible, affordable health care that doesn’t exclude pre existing conditions. Let’s make sure our Members of Congress hear from us!! Now is the time to get the job done.
Join hundreds of Houstonians as they speak out in favor of National Health Care Reform. Participating organizations include: Organizing for America, HCAN, ACORN, AFL- CIO, The Harris County Democratic Party, Houston Federation of Teachers, SEIU HOPE, SEIU Justice for Janitors.
President Obama has always said that what’s essential about health insurance reform is that it must lower costs, ensure all Americans have affordable health insurance options and increase choice and competition in the health insurance market.

Greater Heights Democrats learned today that the Montrose Area Democrats Mayoral Debate has been Cancelled. Greater Heights Democrats is also very disappointed in the three campaigns decision not to honor their commitments. We had planned to join M.A.D. for our meeting this month. Please note:
There are no plans for GHDC to have a meeting.
We also wish to thank those that had work so hard to have this debate.
Kevin J Hoffman
President, GHDC
email from M.A.D.
"We have received a form letter from the Brown, Locke and Parker campaigns canceling their participation in the Montrose Area Democrats (M.A.D.) Mayoral Debate, scheduled for this Friday, September 18. Without candidate participation, M.A.D. must now call off the debate itself. The debate was to be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church hall and would have been free and open to anyone who wished to attend.
We are deeply disappointed by the three campaigns’ decision not to honor their commitments, both verbal and written.
We had hoped to engage the candidates in matters important to Montrose such as fair allocation of resources, political reunification for Montrose, City Council redistricting and other issues. The cancellation comes after we have put a great deal of time and effort into arranging the forum. All details had been finalized, including sound, seating, refreshments, security and debate protocols. We had received generous financial sponsorships from State Representative Garnet Coleman, State Senator John Whitmire, Heights Democrats and Mark’s American Cuisine, among others. We had arranged for a respected moderator and panelists who would have ensured a lively, informative debate.
Many thanks to all those who participated in organizing the forum. Montrose Area Democrats is committed to making sure that the voice of our unique neighborhood is heard and that our diverse community is equally represented in political matters. Those who share these goals should consider joining us at www.montroseareademocrats.org"

We are asking our membership to please bring a backpack filled with school supplies. We will be giving these to the MD Anderson YMCA to help out with their backpack drive. Our very own Councilman Ed Gonzalez sits on the Board of this YMCA which serves District H families. As you may know many of our area families do not have the means to provide the basic supplies needed to get their kids off to a good start for the new school year.
“The YMCA’s Fifth Annual Operation Backpack aims to collect school supplies for more than 35,000 Houston-area children.”
"Operation Backpack is about getting our young children and students ready for the first day of school. In a school district there is not a more important day in the year than the first day of school," said Dr. Abe Saavedra, HISD Superintendent. “
“Last year, YMCA Operation Backpack collected 16,823 backpacks and 203,750 school supplies, thanks to generous Houston area donors. All of the items helped prepare nearly 34,000 children for their first day of school. Two years ago, YMCA’s Operation Backpack collected more than 11,800 backpacks and 152,000 school supplies that helped prepare more than 25,000 children for their first day of school. This year’s goal is to touch the lives of 35,000 children.”
If you can not make the GHDC meeting please drop off a backpack filled with supplies at the MD Anderson YMCA located at 705 Cavalcade, Houston, TX 77009, phone # 713-697-0648
