In Memoriam: Henry Weissborn Jr., GHDC Secretary

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 12:00 pm by M Beauregard

Henry Weissborn,   1955-2008
Henry had a heart attack and died last Tuesday at the meeting of Meyerland Democrats.  His sudden and tragic death are a shock to us all.  Henry had a passion for both food and the Democratic Party, thereby doing what he loved best at the time of his death.  He was an excellent writer and provided us with impeccable meeting minutes.  A celebration of life with refreshments will be held Saturday, 4-8pm, Forest Park Westheimer, 12800 Westheimer.

In Memorium: Bill Buie, longtime activist and volunteer for Heights Democrats

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 3:53 am by M Beauregard

William A. Buie
WILLIAM A. BUIE, born March 2, 1932 in Houston, Texas passed away Thursday, October 11, 2007 at the age of 75. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957. Bill worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a Railroad Clerk for over 25 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council 11023 and the Catholic Chaplains Corps. Bill enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Caribbean, and the United States.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Loron and Lucille Buie; and several aunts and uncles. Bill is survived by his lifetime partner of 33 years, Bob Rogers; uncle, Douglas Boutwell and his wife Maurine; cousins, Shirley Taylor, JoAnn Stubbs, Connie Brown, Joy McNally, Reggie Boutwell, James Boutwell, and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 15, 2007 at Earthman Downtown Chapel, 2420 Fannin.

A Funeral Mass will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3600 Travis. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Dr., Houston, Texas 77024-8022.

Bill & Bob have been longtime members of Greater Heights Democrats Club and we will certainly miss their energy and historical perspective on both politics, but also the GLBT movement.  They are only 1 generation away, and GLBT struggles for equality and respect have improved, but still have a long ways to go.   It is committed couples like BIll & Bob who have proven to the world the validity of same gender relationships, and the power and value they contribute to our local communities.  Bill’s recent phone calling last May to "get out the vote" for the Melissa Noriega Campaign truly made a difference in that race.  Again, we will truly miss the involvement of this dynamic couple and want to support Bob any way that we can in his time of loss.

In Memoriam, Martha Diaz, Chairman Precinct 2

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 6:16 am by M Beauregard

Martha Diaz

Martha Diaz, another fine Democrat, passed away on October 1. Martha served as precinct chair for Precinct 2 for 40 years. She was one of those “behind the scenes” Democrats who works in the trenches – in the neighborhood — organizing Democrats at the grassrooots, all without personal glorification or ambition. And she did that for forty years!

Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States when Martha Diaz first became a precinct chair in Harris County. The Vietnam war was just beginning. No person had ever set foot on the moon. Forty years of dedicated service to the Democratic Party is a remarkable accomplishment and a true inspiration to all of us.

Martha’s daughter Kathryn Diaz-Garcia continues the family tradition, serving as precinct chair for Precinct 501. To her and her four brothers and sisters, and to Martha’s twelve grand children, three great grandchildren, sister, and other family members, the Harris County Democratic Party extends its deepest sympathies.

And as importantly, its profound appreciation for four decades of faithful service to the Democratic Party.

MARTHA DIAZ, age 82, born August 22, 1925 in Houston, Texas to Manuel and Victoria Angel Velasquez, entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 1, 2007 in Houston, Texas. Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband, Porfirio F. Diaz, Sr. as well as her parents. She is survived by her children, Dolores Sorola and husband Joe, Porfirio F. Diaz, Jr. and wife Honora, Carolyn Musslewhite, Patricia Diaz Garza, Kathryn Diaz Garcia and husband John; grandchildren, Christina Santillan, Joseph Sorola II, Martin Sorola, Orianna Diaz Frankie, Porfirio Francis Diaz, Ariel Diaz, Matthew Musslewhite, Jeffrey Musslewhite, Kathryn Musslewhite, Mildred Musslewhite, Mark Garza, and Christian Garcia; great-grandchildren, E.J. Santillan, Alexander Santillan, and Elizabeth Musslewhite; and her sister, Rita Ratcliff. A visitation will be 1:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Earthman Downtown, 2420 Fannin Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1505 Kane Street. The Rite of Committal will follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

In Memoriam, Sue Trapp

Posted in GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 8:07 pm by M Beauregard

PASSING OF A TERRIFIC DEMOCRAT, Sue Trapp

Longtime Harris County Democratic Party Office Volunteer Sue Trapp passed away Thursday. Sue had been a dedicated contributor to the Democratic cause for years, working tirelessly and selflessly behind the scenes to assure a viable Democratic presence and organization in Harris County. She was the person who scheduled volunteers to staff the HCDP headquarters and the individual who made endless calls and trips to solicit items for HCDP auctions, sponsors for HCDP events, and items for HCDP headquarters. She worked at least one day a week – and frequently more than that – as an HCDP office volunteer, doing whatever needed to be done, – from ordering supplies to acquiring Democratic merchandise and memorabilia on line. And most remarkably, she did it all without need for personal recognition or accolade – just to do her part (and so much more than that) to put Democrats in Harris County in a place where we can win elections here.

Co-workers at the Party, fellow volunteers, Democratic activists throughout the county, and many, many others whose lives she touched and who were inspired by her unwavering devotion to Democratic principles and ideals and her remarkable willingness to put her energy and her time where her heart was, mourn her passing and express our sincere collective condolences to her husband Roy and the rest of her family. In honor of her hard work for the HCDP and in her memory, the silent auction at this year’s Johnson-Rayburn-Richards Dinner will be known as the “Sue Trapp Memorial Silent Auction.”

You hear this a lot when someone passes away, but in this case it is incredibly and uncommonly true: she will be missed!

honoring E.I. and Irene Smith

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 7:05 am by M Beauregard

E.I. and Irene Smith

Two of our most loyal members have been long time Heights area
residents, E.I. and Irene Smith, pictured here receiving a Proclamation
in their honor on August 7 from County Judge Ed Emmett.  This proclamation
followed the presentations made on August 2 by State Rep Jessica
Farrar, by Michael Halpin for Sheila Jackson Lee, by Adrian Garcia on
behalf of the City of Houston, and by Bruce Mosier.

Cottage Grove residents (T.C.Jester and I-10 area) today enjoy great benefits
gained from the timely commitments of E.I. and Irene Smith.  Civic minded
and active in their community for many decades, E.I. and Irene are being
honored for their inspired and untiring devotion to protecting and developing
the quality of life in Cottage Grove. Transit service, the development of
recreational features in the park, the fire station and the nearby
police storefront are examples of current local assets derived from
their dedicated commitments to these diverse causes and their ability to
collaborate with elected officials, businesses and neighbors in the
community.

The Smiths have served as election judges and election clerks and have
been active in their precinct over fifty years.  Navy veteran, E.I.,
drove METRO buses for 48 years, served as Harris County Constable in
Precinct 1 and as President of the METRO Retirees for many years.  Irene
and E.I. are active members of the Cottage Grove Civic Club and longterm
participants in the City of Houston’s Police Department Positive
Interaction Program.  May it be known that August 7, 2007 shall be
proclaimed a day to celebrate the leadership and exemplary commitments
E.I. and Irene Smith have made to the quality of life for the working
class families of Cottage Grove, the City of Houston and Harris County
Texas.

Congratulations to this special a couple who have helped Democrats their entire life-
time and shown us all the importance and benefit of civic engagement to our community!!

Who to Vote for President?

Posted in GHDC Blog, Special Events & Honors at 4:57 pm by M Beauregard

While there are many different choices of polls to gauge candidates by, this particular online questionnaire is the best because it links your values and opinions to those of the candidates anonymously.

This is an issues driven questionnaire with candidate values and qualities added to the mix.  There are over 2 dozen candidates from both parties (announced or possible) that are included in this survey.  You will not know the names of the candidates on the list until you have submitted your response.

http://www.selectsmart.com/president/2008.html

Perhaps, it is worth your time to see where the candidates "RANK" on your list of political priorities based on issues and values.   You may be surprised who thinks as you do, but you are unaware of it.

It only takes a few minutes of your time to respond.
