Symposium on World Immigration/Demographics

Posted in Expired Posts at 8:00 am by M Beauregard

In celebration of October as the month when the United States reaches the landmark population threshold of 300 million, and in honor of the

61st Anniversary of the United Nations

Texas Economic & Demographic Association          www.TEDA.org
and The United Nations Association, Houston Chapter www.UNAHouston.org
are proud to announce

A Symposium on World Immigration and Demographics

Thursday            October 19, 2006           8:00 a.m. - Noon

Federal Reserve Bank                 1801 Allen Parkway                       Houston, Texas 77002

Speakers include:

Moderator and Introduction: Dr. Nestor Rodriguez, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Sociology and Co-Director, Center for Immigration Research, University of Houston. Professor Rodriguez’s research includes international migration, immigration policy, border enforcement, global urban development, racial/ethnic relations, and state repression. His present research is a focus of the impact of the 1996 immigration act and its current results.

1) Ms. Vasantha Kandiah, Assistant Director, Population Division, United Nations, New York City. Ms. Kandiah will define the global context with a brief introduction to major world population trends, especially birth rates. She will offer a broad overview of immigration patterns in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Most important, she will describe the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly September 14-15, 2006, which was the first-ever dialogue amongst high level UN ministers on immigration.

2) Dr. Dudley Poston, Professor of Sociology, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Dr. Poston is an expert on the gender imbalance in China. His research shows that there are already 32 million males who have no opportunity to secure a spouse. This gender imbalance has significant socioeconomic implications, including an impending commercial sex trade, spread of HIV, and potentially massive social pressure to emigrate from China.

3) Ms. Danielle Bolks, LMSW, Director of Refugee Resettlement, Catholic Charities, Houston. Ms. Bolks will describe migration conditions in Africa, why the problems exist, causes of refugee displacement, assistance efforts of Catholic Charities in relocating refugees to the U.S., and the impact of their clients arriving in Houston.

TEDA is trying to recruit a fourth, local speaker to address the changing immigration and labor force issues within the European Union.

GHDC Meeting, Saturday October 14th

Posted in Events, Expired Posts, Meetings at 12:01 am by sbruns

The 2006 November Elections are right around the corner! Still lots to do and much to learn about your candidates.

Join us for a great morning and get to know your community.

Meeting Speaker: Sandra Puente, Director of Fundraising & Programs, Harris Co. Democratic Party.
Sandra will explain the jubilation of the Democrats to this week’s $1M. donation to the Chris Bell Campaign by Houston Attorney John O’Quinn.
She will also briefly discuss the City Charter Amendments, A to H [ I know…boring but important!].  The Mayor and
Council need these for public safety and infrastructure.  Alas, there IS opposition from those eternal [infernal?] people who thrive on tax cuts at the expense of matching federal funds and mush needed public service!

We will have yard signs, campaign materials, and we will also have "talking points" on many of the issues so you can discuss intelligently and persuade your friends!.

Have you had enough?  VOTE Democratic!!

This clever video [above] isn’t local but it sure expresses our opinions!

We are also hosts for the happy hour David Van Os Rally, next Wed. Oct 18 . so we need to prepare for that: balloons, signs etc.

Location:  Chatters Restaurant, 140 S. Heights Blvd.    (Just south of the intersection at Heights Blvd. and Washington)
