AGENDA:
1) Speakers include Maureen Haver, Canvass Director,
2) Recognition of E.I. & Irene Smith, longtime members of Heights Democrats
Texans Together is a nonpartisan organization that focuses on ISSUES concerning all citizens.
Maureen is Canvass Director, who is recruiting paid positions for blockwalking in Alief, Aldine, and Spring Branch (latent Democratic areas) to survey voters’ attitudes and begin the grassroots mobilization needed for 2008.
As the Republican Party continues to unravel on a weekly basis, it is obvious that Democrats stand a commanding opportunity in 2008. However, this does not mean that former Repubs will systematically bolt to our corner and vote Democratic. Thus, the mission and message of Texans Together becomes an increasingly important, but relevant and neutral communication tool to these Repubs. We all know some of these folks, at work or within our families, so by appealing to them through our VALUES, rather than party affiliation, we can open a persuasive dialog on why the Repub Party does not fulfill their expectations in policy or leadership.
TT Monthly meeting, free lunch, 2nd Tuesday, 11:30, Upper Kirby Bldg, 3015 Richmond with speakers on timely topics.

What We Do Texans Together:
- Educates Texans about economic opportunity solutions
- Suverys Texans about their concerns
- Registers disengaged voters

E.I. and Irene Smith
Two of our most loyal members have been long time Heights area
residents, E.I. and Irene Smith, pictured here receiving a Proclamation
in their honor on August 7 from County Judge Ed Emmett. This proclamation
followed the presentations made on August 2 by State Rep Jessica
Farrar, by Michael Halpin for Sheila Jackson Lee, by Adrian Garcia on
behalf of the City of Houston, and by Bruce Mosier.
Cottage Grove residents (T.C.Jester and I-10 area) today enjoy great benefits
gained from the timely commitments of E.I. and Irene Smith. Civic minded
and active in their community for many decades, E.I. and Irene are being
honored for their inspired and untiring devotion to protecting and developing
the quality of life in Cottage Grove. Transit service, the development of
recreational features in the park, the fire station and the nearby
police storefront are examples of current local assets derived from
their dedicated commitments to these diverse causes and their ability to
collaborate with elected officials, businesses and neighbors in the
community.
The Smiths have served as election judges and election clerks and have
been active in their precinct over fifty years. Navy veteran, E.I.,
drove METRO buses for 48 years, served as Harris County Constable in
Precinct 1 and as President of the METRO Retirees for many years. Irene
and E.I. are active members of the Cottage Grove Civic Club and longterm
participants in the City of Houston’s Police Department Positive
Interaction Program. May it be known that August 7, 2007 shall be
proclaimed a day to celebrate the leadership and exemplary commitments
E.I. and Irene Smith have made to the quality of life for the working
class families of Cottage Grove, the City of Houston and Harris County
Texas.
Congratulations to this special a couple who have helped Democrats their entire life-
time and shown us all the importance and benefit of civic engagement to our community!!

Saturday, Sept 8
The Reach Out to Dropouts walk is part of a continuing effort to support "expectation: GRADUATION," a citywide initiative to increase area graduation rates by visiting students who have not yet returned to class to persuade them to complete their studies and graduate.
During last year’s walk, almost 600 students committed to return to school, and of the 2,280 students recovered throughout the remainder of the school year, more than 200 graduated in May.
For this year’s walk, HISD will again step up its effort by increasing the number of participating campuses from 20 to 23 and attempting to recruit more than 2,300 volunteers, or 100 per high school.
Choose the HS you prefer to assist.
It’s not too late to participate!! Call for on-site instructions, 713-556-7017

Dear Friend:
I need your help in some very important community events and want to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in the following events:
Reach Out to Dropout Walk
We are all aware that the back-to-school time is upon us. Many students and parents are very busy looking for the right school clothes and supplies. Unfortunately, some of our youth do not intend on being at school on the first day or any day thereafter, they have made the decision to drop out! These young people need to know that education is the key to a successful future, which is why I am asking you to join me for the "Reach out to Dropout Walk". This initiative is an excellent outreach effort to bring these youth back to school, where they belong. This is a huge task and many volunteers are needed.
The walk will attempt to recover students who did not return to class, as well as those who have demonstrated chronic absenteeism. It will take place on September 8, 2007 from 8 am to noon. I have participated in this effort for many years, and I have seen how a simple visit by someone from the community, expressing an interest in them, has made all the difference. Your participation can influence a young person to make the right decision! Please see below for more information on how to sign-up to volunteer for the walk.
Campaign Blockwalking
I am seeking re-election to Houston City Council this November and I need your help to walk my district, visit with citizens and ask for their support for my re-election. I am asking my friends and supporters to assist me in this task, I am a firm believer in walking the community and visiting with folks one-on-one, and blockwalking is the best way to do it.
We will begin walking in the near future and I hope I can count on you as a volunteer. Regardless of how much time you can spare, one hour or several hours, we can use your help! No previous experience is necessary. To volunteer, please contact Ed Gonzalez at ed@adriangarcia.com or call him at (713) 498-6969 .
We hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely, Adrian Garcia Council Member, District H
