Happy Hour with John Edwards, $15. Wed. 5pm

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog at 3:16 am by M Beauregard

John Edwards '08

Dear Heights Democrats,

John is going to be in Houston next Wednesday night to meet with local supporters, and he asked that I invite you to join him. Space is limited, so I hope you sign up to reserve your spot right away!

Here are the details:

  • What: "Small Change for Big Change" grassroots fundraiser with John Edwards and you
  • Where: Goode’s Armadillo Palace, 5015 Kirby Drive @ Bartlett, Houston, Texas 77098
  • When: Wednesday, June 27th, 5:00 PM

*Cash Bar*

RSVP online to reserve your spot at:

www.johnedwards.com/smallchangeforbigchange/20070627-rsvp

This is an important event, because it’s part of our "Small Change for Big Change" grassroots fundraiser series.

It’s very expensive to reach out to voters in early primary states and across the nation. But the trouble with the usual fundraisers is that they are only open to those ready to write huge checks–and this campaign is built on reaching out to everyone.

So John asked his campaign to organize this series of grassroots fundraisers for supporters who share our passion but may only be able to spare $25 or $50 dollars. In fact, for next Wednesday’s event, tickets are just $15 each.

This campaign is about working together to achieve truly transformational change for our country and our world. We’re about creating a world where every man, woman and child in America has the quality affordable health care they need, where no child here (or anywhere) has to go to bed hungry, where the planet and its people do not have to face the ravages of global warming, and where our men and women in Iraq are swiftly brought home to a hero’s welcome.

Is this all possible? Can we create that world? Yes. But not without you.

If you’d like to join us in this great effort, John would like to meet you next Wednesday night and talk to you about what’s next. We really hope you’ll be able to make it.

Here’s the link again to RSVP and reserve your spot:

Pride Parade Photos

Posted in GHDC Blog, Photos at 10:36 am by M Beauregard

Despite the rain which stopped by 7pm, it was a gorgeous night (not so hot).   We deliberately recruited some "Beefcake" to energize the young crowd and diversify the image of the Party.  The shirtless Dems carried the HCDP banner and led the unit.  Lots of YDs and Stonewall YDs showed up, so their participation with us and in politics was an important message to send to the crowd, which is mostly young folks.

Pride Parade, 8-12pm on Westheimer

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog at 6:51 am by M Beauregard

2007 Pride Parade, Saturday, June 23, 8:45-11 p.m.

lower Westheimer between Woodhead & Whitney

March with other Dem clubs in the Pride Parade!!  Come meet new people and enjoy the craziness of 150,000 spectators along Westheimer.   Summer is here, so have some fun with us!  Last year we won the "Stonewall Award for Best Social Commentary" and we are making some great props this year.   Just show up!
We are number 44 in the parade.  Our staging area is at the corner of Woodhead and Harold.  Some of us will be there at 6:00 p.m. to decorate our vehicle and get the props in order.  The line-up area will be closed to traffic at 7:00 p.m., so you will have to park a few blocks away.  Please arrive at the staging area no later than 8:00 p.m., if at all possible.    The parade will start at 9:00 p.m.  Wear light clothing and comfortable shoes.
The theme for this year’s LGBT Pride Parade is

LONE STAR PRIDE

Greater Heights Democrats
Harris County Democrats (the club)
Harris County Young Democrats
Montrose Democrats

ROADwomen
Stonewall Young Democrats

are working together to create a strong visual image for the Harris County Democratic Party’s entry in the 2007 LGBT Pride Parade.

We invite all Harris County Democratic clubs to bring as many of their members as possible, and we certainly welcome Democrats who are not yet affiliated with a club.

The parade is Saturday night, June 23.

We need lots of Democrats to carry club banners and props.  The props are not heavy; we just plan to have lots of them.

We have paid the throw fee for Mardi Gras beads, so bring ‘em if ya got ‘em.

Whether you are one of the 1000+ participants or one of the 150,000+ attendees, there is nothing quite like the exhilaration of Houston’s annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Parade. As America’s original nighttime Pride Parade and the largest annual GLBT event in the Southwest, it holds a unique place in the hearts of Houstonians and the many visitors who come to the Parade from throughout Texas and Louisiana and from other parts of the country.

The Parade is a thrill for spectators all the way down Westheimer from Woodhead to Whitney. Throughout the route, the Parade is an empowering blend of light, color and sound with beautiful floats, costumes and performances.

Gov Perry does not really care about education or teachers or he would take REAL action to do so!

No Signature on SB 1846…

But Governor’s Office Suggests Positive Outcome

The bill that authorizes the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) Board of Trustees to provide retirees a 13th check benefit increase has not yet been signed into law.  According to

Texas law, the Governor has 20 days to sign, veto, or allow the bill to become law.  TRTA’s communications with the Governor’s office has been very positive with no veto threat ever being discussed.  Time is running out, though, for the Governor to actually sign this bill as opposed to allowing it to become law without his signature.

Many TRTA members have asked if now is the time to launch a grassroots effort to put pressure on Governor Perry to sign the bill, but since the legislation does not seem to be threatened by a gubernatorial veto, TRTA has not acted on a special call-in campaign.  TRTA members are not being discouraged from contacting the Governor’s office, but at this time, it seems more likely that this bill is still in a good position for favorable action by Governor Perry or his allowing it to simply become law.

If the Governor takes no action by Sunday, June 17, 2007 the bill will automatically become law.

If you want to register your comments with Governor Perry’s office about the signing on SB 1846, please call the Governor’s Citizen’s Assistance Hotline at (800) 843-5789.

TRS Board Meeting this Week

The TRS Board of Trustees will be meeting in

Austin this Thursday and Friday (June 14th and 15th).  Their agenda will include a time for public comment and TRTA will speak to the Board on the passage of SB 1846 and the responsibilities the Trustees have in working to get a 13th check sent to retired public education employees.

A controversial issue will likely be the Board’s responsibility to increase the active member TRS contribution if needed to make the system actuarially sound enough to provide a benefit increase to TRS annuitants.

The Legislature did not increase the active member contribution, but did authorize the TRS Board of Trustees to increase that contribution from 6.4% to as high as 6.58% if necessary.

Though TRTA would have rather seen the Legislature fully fund the 13th check benefit increase with an ample funding level, the legislation was designed to take a "wait and see" approach on the fund’s financial condition pending the August 31, 2007 actuarial valuation.  Many legislators believe that a 6.58% State contribution combined with the System’s strong earnings so far this year will be enough to make the fund sound and provide the 13th check with no increase in active member contribution.  If so, TRTA certainly supports that position, but if a contribution increase is needed TRTA expects the TRS Board of Trustees to act quickly and increase that contribution level to provide retirees the much needed 13th check.

TRTA will report on other happenings with the TRS Board of Trustees when their meetings are over.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Tim Lee at 1.800.880.1650 or by email to tim@trta.org.

Thanks for all you do to support TRTA.

Glenna Bell debuts new duet with Johnny Bush:

Posted in Events, GHDC Blog at 4:27 am by M Beauregard

Tune into at 5 pm for Lee Powell’s ten minute show.
Hear Glenna Bell’s new song, "The East Side," make its world debut over the   airwaves, just like radio used to be.  Only in Texas.  Y’all come!

Glenna Bell debuts her duet with Johnny Bush–Texas Country Music Hall of Famer and writer of "Whiskey River"–will debut Monday, June 18 on KNON.

I am honored to be played just after Lee Powell, a great talent I met when we both performed last month in Dallas at Bill’s record store.  Lee is a natural storyteller of Texas lore in the old-school style.  He’s the real deal, a working cowboy who won a championship in roping only a couple of weekends ago and conducted the last known interview with Dale Evans, not to mention the years he has spent collecting many fascinating facts and tales of Texas past.
