The following map shows the number of new, single family building permits by year 2003-2006, by zipcode. Almost 18% of the citywide growth has been in zips 77007 & 77008, where 4645 permits were issued. This dramatic growth and redevelopment clearly shows the importance of the Heights to the success of any forthcoming political campaign.
Notes on the map: Size of the pie is the total number of permits issued, relative to all other zipcode pies. Wedges of the pie show the % for each year growth occurred. Map does not include demolition permits (which were most likely equally substantial) or multifamily/apartment growth.

Dear Texan: Below is a vital message regarding an upcoming vote.
IMPORTANT PROPERY TAX VOTE MAY 12
If you are a Texas homeowner then this is important to you. Please forward this email to all in your email list who are Texas residents.
Everyone needs to be aware of a constitutional amendment that will be on the ballot at the May election. It is an amendment to correct an error made by the lawmakers when they voted for a reduction in school property taxes in 2005. When the lawmakers voted for a one-third reduction of school property taxes beginning in 2006 and to be completed this year, they forgot about the homestead exemption for senior citizens and people with disabilities. The state constitution caps school property taxes for homeowners 65 years or older and those who are disabled. However, they DID NOT get the same reduction when the property tax cut for schools was voted on two years ago. So an amendment is on the May ballot to correct this error. The problem is that most voters who are younger than 65 or not disabled probably won’t even notice the amendment or care. PLEASE get out and vote for this amendment … if not for yourself, then for your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. We would really appreciate your getting the word out to all your friends and families to vote for this amendment. The fear is that with a low voter turnout, the amendment could very well not pass. So, please, please pass the word and vote FOR the constitutional amendment. Early voting will take place,
April 30-May 5 from 7 am to 7 pm
May 6 from noon to 6 pm, and
May 7-May 8 from 7 am to 7 pm.
Election day is May 12 from 7 am to 7 pm.
Spread the word and VOTE!!!
Lee Arellano
president, HCDLA

This is a big donor event to begin raising money for the 2008 local campaign to elect judges and county officials. Dallas Co. swept out the Republicans and took every local county office in 2006, so there is NO reason it cannot be done in Harris Co. in 2008. There are currently NO Democratic judges in our courthouse.

It’s a $500 per plate fundraising event and will feature as speakers, members of the Dallas County Democratic Party, who will discuss their successful plan for sweeping all elective offices in Dallas County in the 2006 election. Proceeds will fund Harris County Democrats’ own success plan for turning Harris County Blue in 2008.

Hear Darlene Ewing, Present Chair Dallas County Democratic Party; Ken Molberg, Former Chair Dallas Democratic Party; Jane Hamilton, Political Director, Texas Democratic Trust; Hon. Martin J. Hoffman, Judge, 68th Civil District Court tell how a concerted, well planned, well-funded, well executed effort helped Dallas Democrats elect a district attorney, county commissioners, 44 judges and, in fact, every Democratic candidate running for a county office in 2006.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo @ Barrio Antiguo, 725 Yale Street, Houston, TX 77007
w/free Margaritas 1-5pm,
Heights Rail to Trail Symbolic Walk/Ride
Rail to Trail Symbolic Walk/Ride Join Heights neighbors and community leaders as they claim the long awaited Hike/Bike trail for our community and bikers everywhere!
Meet @ 19th and Nicholson at 8:30 a.m. (where the old rail line was)
• What: Bike and walk event • When: Saturday, 8:30 a.m.
• Where: Starting at 19th and Nicholson streets, it will follow about 2 miles of the proposed 6.5-mile-long hike-and-bike-trail and end at the railroad trestle at White Oak Bayou, just south of West Sixth Street, near the Blue Line Bike Store, 3302 White Oak Drive.
Heights residents are staging a bike and walk event Saturday to draw attention to the Rails to Trails hike-and-bike trail in the Heights, which has been in the works since the 1990s, but has still not been built. The trail the residents are fighting for would be a 6.5-mile long, 10-foot wide cement path running the length of the old Southern Pacific railroad track along Nicholson from West 26th to West 7th streets.
It would then link to the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad track under the Durham and Shepherd Street bridges at West Seventh Street, continuing across Yale and Heights Boulevard, over Studewood and White Oak Bayou ending at the University of Houston-Downtown campus.
• More details: Food and water will be available. Participants should plan to use mountain bikes, not street bikes. Children are welcome. For more information, call Karen Mann at 713-703-0520
in the May 12 election. Melissa is endorsed by the Houston Chronicle and we need everyone to vote to insure a strong win that will preclude a runoff and cinch a the win in November.
We are plannning a Victory Party for us all very soon!
