Everyone take a deep breath and take a moment out of your day to watch this. I know you’ll enjoy it, just think about the work we’re doing to reform the Democratic party and make it a viable entity again and apply it to the commercial.

Please join Near Northside community leaders at a hearing at the Harris County Civil Court House, 13th Floor 201 Caroline, between Franklin and Congress on Wednesday, May 16, 4:00 pm as we once again must take a stand to show that we are Pro- Rail / BRT in the Near Northside.
Did you all see KPRC-2’s one-sided coverage (video links below) of the rail opponents on Sunday and Monday (see below for links)? I’m planning to contact the reporter, Robert Arnold, and encourage him to do a follow-up story and talk with some of the groups that really represent the community and are fighting FOR rail. Would any of you be game to talk to him? Do you know others in the ‘hood who should?
Thanks,
Robin

Judge will consider request to authorize "fishing expedition"
The opposition’s 202 hearing has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 16, at 4:00 pm. The public is allowed to observe and take notes (no photos during the hearing). Several of us will be there — with our RR buttons on — to see what happens and talk to the media. Will you go along with us?
Watch for a RichmondRail media advisory with more background on the players and their history later today.
We alerted you in mid-April that rail opponents filed a "202 motion" in civil court. If granted, the motion would allow rail opponents to "fish for evidence" against METRO.
What: Hearing on motion filed on behalf of Daphne Scarbrough Where: 215th Judicial District Court of Harris County, Texas, Judge Levi Benton Harri s County Civil Court House, 13th Floor 201 Caroline, between Franklin and Congress When: Wednesday, May 16, 4:00 pm

Glenna lives in 2nd Ward and we hope she will play at our next social event, which we plan to hold at the end of the month!!
State Represenative Jessica Farrar and the Texas House of
Representatives

presented to her next Tuesday, May 15, at the Capital in Austin!
Song Repertoire:
H.R. No. 1304
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A talented singer and songwriter, Beaumont native
Glenna Bell is drawing attention for her stark yet beautiful songs
that conjure up the heartfelt essence of traditional country music
while expressing a fresh, contemporary perspective; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Bell has recorded three albums to date, Nobody’s Girl,
which appeared in 1998, Face This World, from 2006, and The Road Less
Traveled, which is scheduled to appear in 2007; each features her
haunting songs that present tales of heartache, love, and loss in a
stripped down and powerful style; and
WHEREAS, Glenna Bell’s music is colored by the sounds that she grew
up with in East Texas: a cappella hymns sung in her family’s church
and old-school country music that she discovered in her relatives’
record collections; with the help of veteran Texas musicians such as
John Evans, who has produced Ms. Bell’s last two albums, and Johnny

her influences into moving songs that are receiving airplay on country

We all want lower gas prices, but it appears this won’t do it.
www.UrbanLegends.com
Comments: Wrong, wrong, wrong.
1. There was no nationwide "gas out" in 1997. There was one in 1999, but it didn’t cause gas prices to drop 30 cents per gallon overnight. In fact, it didn’t cause them to drop at all. Despite the popularity of the email campaign, the event itself attracted scant participation and was completely ineffectual.
2. There are over 205 million Internet users in the United States, far more than the 73 million claimed.
3. If, say, a hundred million drivers refused en masse to fill up their tanks on May 15, the total of what they didn’t spend could amount to as much as $3 billion. However, it doesn’t follow that such a boycott would actually decrease oil companies’ revenues by that amount, given that the average sales of gasoline across the entire U.S. is under $1 billion per day in the first place.
4. Whether the total impact was a half-billion, 3 billion, or 10 billion dollars, the sales missed due to a one-day consumer boycott wouldn’t hurt the oil companies one bit. Think about it. Every single American who doesn’t buy gas on Tuesday is still going to have to fill up their tank on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, making up for Tuesday’s losses. Sales for the whole week would be normal, or very close to it.
A meaningful boycott would entail participants actually consuming less fuel — and doing so in a sustained, disciplined fashion over a defined period of time — not just choosing to wait a day or two before filling up as usual.

Volunteers are needed Sunday to place the flags (now over 4500) and read names throughout the weekend. Come donate some of your time to this worthy group which has been honoring the Iraq War dead since the war began and before anti-war sentiment was commonplace. Flag honorees include veteran suicides and innocent Iraqi civilians.

Speaker Pelosi in Houston for grandson’s communion
By KRISTEN MACK Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
No trip is purely personal when you are Speaker of the House.
Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to lead the House, was in Houston this weekend for the first communion of her 8-year-old grandson Sean Kenneally.
"I was mainly here for this," Pelosi said after the service today at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. "And to celebrate Mother’s Day. This is exciting for us."
But today politics will once again be front and center as she headlines a fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, downtown at The Coronado Club, 919 Milam @ Walker.
This is her first trip to Texas since since taking up the gavel.
"We’re honored whenever she comes," Pelosi’s daughter, Jacqueline Kenneally said. "We’re especially thrilled to have her here to celebrate Sean’s special day."
When local Democrats found out Pelosi planned to come to Houston they scheduled a luncheon in her honor. Pelosi, who represents San Francisco, has long been the House Democrats’ most prolific fundraiser.
Entrance to the high-dollar event starts at $2,500. In order to gain "committee member" status, people must pledge to write a $10,000 check or raise it, and co-chairs must commit to writing or raising $25,000 per couple. Democratic heavy hitters Bob and Gracie Cavnar are hosting the event.
The event is oversold, "we have more people than space," Gracie Cavnar said today. They are expecting 75 attendees and have raised more than $150,000 for the Democratic party.
The Cavnars praised Pelosi’s leadership in Washington for "wrangling her raucous caucus into a powerfully organized voice of the people."
"We have always been impressed with the way she rules with an iron fist inside that beautifully wrought velvet glove. You’d think she was a Southern woman," the Cavnars wrote in their e-mail invitation.
This is the seventh year the Cavnars have hosted an annual event for Pelosi. Last year’s contributors included David Matthiesen, Richard Mithoff, Beverly and James Postl, and Sheridan and John Eddie Williams.
The Houston-area congressional Democratic delegation — Al Green, Gene Green, Sheila Jackson Lee and Nick Lampson — plan to attend the luncheon.
Pelosi is expected to make brief remarks at the private event, which is closed to the public and the media, before flying back to Washington, D.C. this afternoon.
"The country really spoke in November that they were ready for a fresh approach and change," Cavnar said.
Pelosi’s tenure as the third-ranking member of government has stood in sharp contrast to the Republican administration.
This week Pelosi led an effort in the House to finance the Iraq war only through midsummer. President Bush has threatened to veto the House plan, approved on a 221-205 vote Thursday night, to require him to seek approval in two months for the balance of the war money.
In April, Pelosi met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus against Bush’s wishes. Bush said it sent mixed messages to the Syrian government, which his administration considers to be a state supporter of terrorism.
During last year’s race to replace former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay in the 22nd Congressional District, Republicans invoked Pelosi’s name, saying a vote for Lampson, who went on to win, was a vote for Pelosi as speaker should the Democrats reclaim control of the House, which they did.
"She’s never been daunted by Texas," Cavnar said of the reliably Republican Lone Star state. "Republicans always want to invoke the fear of ultra-liberalism. As the speaker, she does not let her personal politics drive the business of the House."

Sunday, 2pm at Kobain’s Patio (behind Chatter’s, 140 S Heights Blvd)
FLAG REPAIR “PARTY” (FOR MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE 2007) ON PATIO BEHIND CHATTERS RESTAURANT 2PM SUNDAY MAY 13TH 140 SOUTH HEIGHTS BLVD
Because the flag display has been in the weather for so many times and days, a majority of the name tags on the flags are faded and unreadable. So, we are replacing many of these labels (2000) adding new labels for those killed since the last memorial (~400).
The more people who help, the faster it can be done.
