Senator John Whitmire Secures Funding for West 11th Street Park

Senator John Whitmire (D-Houston) is pleased to announce that today the Senate and House conferees adopted a state budget which includes $3.75 million in funding for the West 11th Street Park. "I am pleased we will now be able to pay off the existing loan and keep the remaining 5 acres of the West 11th Street Park. Preserving this park is crucial for the surrounding neighborhoods and for the City of Houston." Senator Whitmire included the $3.75 million in the budget for local parks grants within the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. Within the next few days, the budget will go before the full house and senate for final approval. ###

There are 20 acres of undeveloped land on W. 11th St near Ella Blvd that were previously owned by HISD which are desired for purchase as a neighborhood park.   There is an August 15 deadline to make payment on a loan which would buy more time to raise the $3.5M to buy the entire 20 acres, vs. only 15.  With the high density apratmetn under construction along 610 north of 18th St., the park is of even greater value to the neighborhood.
