The Heights Democratic Club is a neighborhood-based, subgroup in affiliation with the Harris County Democratic Party. It was established to promote the ideas and beliefs of the Democratic party. We achieve our mission by recruiting speakers for our members from candidates and elected officals at all levels of government. We are called the Greater Heights Democratic Club because we welcome members from adjacent areas to the Heights, particularly inside the Loop between I-10 and Loop 610. Actually we welcome anyone of any belief, as long as they help us promote Democratic causes and candidates.

Sponsored by: State Representative Jessica Farrar, City Council Member Adrian Garcia, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Latinas on the Rise

This Saturday, October 21st (tomorrow) at 10:30 AM, our State Representative Jessica Farrar and District H Councilman Adrian Garcia are having a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the corner of Studewood and 11th Street.
Councilman Garcia and folks say they will be eating at 11th Street Cafe afterwards. If the weather is as nice as today, then clearly Someburger would be another great choice.
Thanks to offthekuff.com for the heads-up, and where you can see the original e-mail from Councilman Garcia.

A Symposium on World Immigration and Demographics
Federal Reserve Bank 1801 Allen Parkway Houston, Texas 77002
Moderator and Introduction: Dr. Nestor Rodriguez, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Sociology and Co-Director, Center for Immigration Research, University of Houston. Professor Rodriguez’s research includes international migration, immigration policy, border enforcement, global urban development, racial/ethnic relations, and state repression. His present research is a focus of the impact of the 1996 immigration act and its current results.
1) Ms. Vasantha Kandiah, Assistant Director, Population Division, United Nations, New York City. Ms. Kandiah will define the global context with a brief introduction to major world population trends, especially birth rates. She will offer a broad overview of immigration patterns in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Most important, she will describe the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly September 14-15, 2006, which was the first-ever dialogue amongst high level UN ministers on immigration.
2) Dr. Dudley Poston, Professor of Sociology, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Dr. Poston is an expert on the gender imbalance in China. His research shows that there are already 32 million males who have no opportunity to secure a spouse. This gender imbalance has significant socioeconomic implications, including an impending commercial sex trade, spread of HIV, and potentially massive social pressure to emigrate from China.
3) Ms. Danielle Bolks, LMSW, Director of Refugee Resettlement, Catholic Charities, Houston. Ms. Bolks will describe migration conditions in Africa, why the problems exist, causes of refugee displacement, assistance efforts of Catholic Charities in relocating refugees to the U.S., and the impact of their clients arriving in Houston.
TEDA is trying to recruit a fourth, local speaker to address the changing immigration and labor force issues within the European Union.
TEDA members $25 per person; Guests $35 Visit TEDA/Houston at www.teda.org
Registration and continental breakfast at 8 a.m.; presentations begin promptly 8:30.
The purpose of this Symposium is to enhance the understanding of immigration in Texas and the nation within the context of immigration worldwide. Meet David Van Os, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General of San Antonio. Our purpose is to put you in touch with the candidates and issues, so this is what we are doing! Come be part of his County-by-County, WhistleStop tour of every Texas courthouse and hear Van Os tackle big oil.
Greg Abbott is sitting on a campaign bank account of approximately $7 million from big business executives and corporate law firms who have written huge checks to purchase the office of Texas Attorney General. But Van Os is reaching out to every county in Texas, placing his trust in the people and in democracy.

I noticed that we did not have any videos for the Chris Bell for Governor campaign on the front page here and I wanted to spotlight this new one called Sacrifice.

We will get the vote results Texas needs if you get your friends and families to the ballot box on November 7th. Remind them, they can vote for all of the democratic candidates by choosing the straight party option on the ballot.
