NO money that you may give to the State Party www.txdemocrats.org  or DNC http://www.democrats.org/ is returned to us locally.  We must raise all our own funds for local outreach, including purchase of these yard signs!!  We are truly a grassroots organization.

4) Why NOT to Vote for Kinky: Here is what you need to tell your friends.
a) He can’t win because he has no base!  Most Kinky supporters are not frequent or routine voters and they are not sufficiently organized to topple the ranks of established Party loyalists!  We can barely educate and engage voters about the beliefs and  workings of a two party system, much less the subtle, serious differences between Kinky and the other candidates on the issues.  We all enjoy a good joke, but the operations of Texas’s $138 BILLION biennial government cannot be left for jokers.
b) As an "Independent", Kinky splits the Democratic base such that any advantage held by the Party against Republicans is diluted and the success of the central candidate (Chris Bell) is jeopardized. The reason we have GW Bush is because Ralph Nader fragmented the Democratic vote in Florida in 2000.  By splintering the Democrats, Nader eroded Gore’s votes to narrowly give Bush enough votes to win, even though Nader could not win himself nationwide!!   Kinky will do the same thing in Texas this year!   A vote for Kinky; is a vote for Perry, and no one wants that!

c) Let’s recognize the pattern that ‘celebrity’ candidates with no governmental experience are quickly ineffective and wasteful of time and resources!  We have seen how ineffective Jesse Ventura was in Minnesota (read more: Jesse Ventura’s gaffe riot ~ From dumb racial jokes to self-serving politics, the Minnesota governor’s past, predicted his future.)

Similarly, Schwarzenegger’s popularity has plummeted, as he has made repeated boondoggles in California!  Let’s not allow Kinky to stifle or ruin Texas because he doesn’t understand the process or the protocol !!
d) Kinky has no "team" whereby he can work effectively with other winning candidates.  Who does he support for Lt Gov? Comptroller? or other vital state officeholders with whom he must work with on a daily basis?  NO ONE!!!  There is no way that these missing relationships could function as an effective state government!
e) Some say Kinky is good for Texas because he gives us a "choice".   Choice is good only if it is a good choice, but Kinky is simply NOT a good one.   We have already heard his racial slurs, drug admissions, and seen him caught with an open beer container in the parade in Dallas.  A media focused on his personal habits is not the image we want for a progressive Texas.   No way!

f) Chris Bell filed the ethical complaints that brought down Tom Delay!!  The Republican Party is in shambles at all levels and falling apart daily. Chris Bell initiated this action and is worthy of our support. As a Houstonian, Chris is good for Houston. Democrats must hold together to take advantage of this opportunity. Chris Bell is honest and ethical; and the other 3 are some form of a Republican, and we don’t need any more of them!!

The following letter is from Glen Maxey, one of Bell’s campaign strategists.  He tells it like it is!!  Either Democrats get to work 1-on1 with friends and neighbors NOW, or we fail again!!

Dear Democratic or Progressive Friend:
I’m really pissed off right now.    The weekend events surrounding Ann Richards’ memorial reminded me over and over about why I do this work.   I’ve spent my entire life working for Democrats and the Democratic Party.

Ann Richards taught me a lot.   I worked in her campaigns, I served as a Texas legislator during her tenure, and I worked on lots of issues with her over the last 25 years.     It was hard to listen to all the great stuff about her this weekend… and think that we’ve actually regressed in this state in the last decade.

While it made me feel good about what we accomplished, the bigger thing gnawing in the pit of my stomach was this:   We’ve let it all slip away, and most aren’t willing to expend the energy or resources to take it back.

I have neither the time nor the energy to ruminate about what went wrong or whose fault it is.  But I do know one thing as clearly as the sparkle in Ann Richards’ eyes.  This year, we can turn it around.   Polls say it.   Demographic shifts say it.  Damn, even Republicans are saying it.

So what are we doing?

For a lot of us, it’s sitting back and bemoaning this or that.   I’m sick of people worrying about little shit, when we could be about the business of taking back our government.

Oh, but Glen, the naysayers whine:  “We don’t have the star candidates.  We don’t have the money.  We don’t have the …. “   Whatever.   Give me a friggin’ break.

This for the armchair politicos who would rather worry and talk than do anything:

You want the entire ticket to win in 2010?  Of course.  So let’s put that in motion now.

You want to run a credible candidate against Cornyn in 2008 and put Texas in play in an open presidential race?  Of course.   Everything we do now is a step forward for 2008.

This is for you issue-oriented folks who can never see the big picture because we’ve siloed and targeted our efforts so narrowly that we can make about as much noise as a BB in a boxcar:

Want to stop the coal-fired plants?

Want to say no to the Trans-Texas Corridor?

Want to tell Jim Leininger and Bob Perry, and the rest of the “buy me the government” crowd to go to hell?

Want to make sure that this scary trigger law issue doesn’t show up on the books in Texas if Roe v. Wade goes down?

Worried at all about these pricks taking away your children if you’re gay or lesbian?

I’m with you 100% on all that.   But what the hell are we doing about it?

It’s pretty easy.

Democrats will win in Texas when we show Texans a Democratic win statewide.

Presidential politics will play out in Texas when we show the nation a Democrat can win in Texas.

All it takes to change that litany of issues (which I stopped typing because it makes me too angry to keep listing this crap) is to put someone in office with the power of appointments and a veto pen.

And what are we doing?

Well, I guess that’s the question.

I’m so tired and pissed off about folks worrying about swing voters and targeted crap that we can’t just turn out our base vote.

Chris Bell is running against three Republicans.

We’re about seven weeks out from the election.

Color me clueless on campaigns (only worked in 200 plus), but if you’re the incumbent and you’re stuck at 35% for over a year, you ain’t gonna git any better.

So it comes down to who can win this thing among the other three.

First, for all of you NOT paying attention, it only takes one more vote than Perry for the winner to be Bell, Kinky or Carole.  There aren’t any run-offs or majority votes.

We know that even in the worst of the Bush tidal wave, we were getting over 30% of the vote for the Democrat in Texas.

The best shot to take out Perry is the person with the most “base” vote behind him.  And by definition the other two Republicans don’t have a base.

This is the most doable statewide race since Ann Richards’ 1990 campaign.

We now have the tools, the technology and the ability to phone, and walk and register voters in every precinct in Texas.    This stuff doesn’t happen by itself.   Each one of us makes it happen.

If you are ready to live with Rick Perry for another four years, sit on your ass.

But if you’re like me and just plain pissed as hell, ask yourself one simple question:

What could I have done to have given Chris Bell that last handful of votes in my county or precinct or church or bar that would have pushed him into first place?   (And you’re really out of it if you even think that by election day Kinky or Carole will be in that position.  Ain’t gonna happen.  No way.)

So as I sat in the Erwin Center and listened to Liz Smith deliver that one-liner of “What would Ann do?,”  I have to tell you that I know.  Because she has been saying it for a long, long time.

“Get off your butt and make something happen.”

And you can make it happen in a million ways.   Pick up the phone.  Turn on the computer.  Print out a walk list, use the new statewide online phone bank.  There are voters to call NOW in your precinct.   Activists all over this state are looking for things to do….  educate them where to find the tools.

You can find lots to do in your precinct at new website at:

www.trueblueaction.com

Just do something.  Anything.

And when we all start working on turning out our base voters again, Democrats will win in Texas.

If you don’t want to receive any more emails from me, just respond with "unsubscribe" in the subject line.   I’ll be sending out more suggestions of how to win this November in emails that follow.  I’ll be glad to unsubscribe you.

Kinky can’t win? Kinkys campain is a joke? Don’t insult the voters of Texas by telling them there to dome to understand the two party system. Voters know what they want, and simply don’t have a dog in the fight under the two party system.

I’ll tell you the exact moment that Kinky can’t win, it will be when partisan hacks relize he will win if they don’t get there act together. With 45 days until the election it is doubtful that will happen in time.

The best way to stop Kinky is by not playing into the trap you are setting to catch yourself.

Hi Mike, I respect your opinion up in Minnesota. You folks have a great democratic history, and I’m not about to challenge you on your comment. In fact I agree with you.

The sad fact of the matter is that we in the ‘opposition’ have the opportunity to spend our finite resources making a concerted stand in this election by getting behind a strong politically experienced candidate like Chris Bell. In not doing so, we just continue this cycle of political oppression that drains away any future hope of reform for Texas.

Face it — a vote for Kinky, while it may be a great poke in the eye to the current ‘politicos’, is also a tacet admission that you don’t believe that there is any real way to change Texas for a better future. Its giving up in frustration.

I think there can be a positive change for Texas. My vote is for Bell.

I lived in MN for 31 years, including during Jesse’s term as MN governor.

When Jesse won the MN governor’s race, everyone was stunned. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, everyone—including Jesse himself (no matter what he says).

We all had varying degrees of admiration for how he had upset the apple cart. There was even speculation among politicos that this was proof the American political landscape had been redefined. Other governors swirled around him, and he was pretty much a cause celebre no matter where in the country or world he went.

During his term in office, he gave back the state’s huge surplus to taxpayers, which helped his popularity. The economy all over turned ugly shortly thereafter, however, and state budget shortages were a problem.

His relationship with the local media went from bad to worse, and his contact with them became media events in and of themselves. He made no pretense of hiding his contempt, and by the end of his term, local news was filled with clips of him insulting, waving off, walking away, or shouting at media in response to what appeared to be little or no provocation.

He announced he wouldn’t run again because he was tired of being in the public eye, though more Minnesotan’s disapproved than approved of his performance; there was plenty of speculation that he wouldn’t win again anyway.
